What to order, what will happen next?

Thu May 16, 2013, 8:50 AM

Yesterday's time lapse is finally done compiling:

I thought I would order some prints today or tomorrow...
But I'm faced with so many problems I can't figure out what to do so I have to think about it.

  1. Should I order big prints (4 foot x 2 foot sailor moon) for anime next? Will they sell?

  2. I will order small prints, but I've gotta draw one more new thing before putting in the order.

  3. Will I go to any more conventions?

I do have a good number of prints left over from tabling at Otakon.. What sold did make up for the cost of the posters, but I wonder if I will ever have a chance to go to another anime convention to table after this year. This may be the last "summer break"... though I was thinking the same thing last year: "this may be the last summer break ever... last anime convention ever..."

Not sure what I will do with the prints I have left over from otakon and probably from animenext. Give them out for free?

Fanart I hope to draw today:
  1. I sort want to draw Stocking, now that I've drawn panty. Done:

  2. Attack on Titan: Mikasa and Eren

  3. Utena maybe

  4. Top wo nerae maybe

  5. Mari Makinami maybe

  6. I want to draw Dennou Coil fanart but it is unrecognizable. It sure would be on topic, what with Google Glass being hot these days.

  7. Find more timeless shows that will be popular for the next 3 years

Agh I need a break!

Tell me what fan art to draw

Tue May 14, 2013, 7:08 PM

OK so it's not an exaggeration when I say I do not know what fan art to draw for anime next.
I opened photoshop in a panic and stared at a 18"x12" and all I could think was "OH LET'S DRAW RAGNAROK ONLINE 2 FANART" headdesk/facepalm/derpdarp.

I don't know how much RO2 fan art I would be able to sell at animenext.. I was really hoping whatever money I earn at animenext could be put towards:
1. Going to Baltimore to submit paintings into their artist alley
2. buying supplies to make more paintings
3. perhaps towards going to a west-coast convention next summer.

BUT FIRST I have to draw these fan arts so people can enjoy them and as a byproduct I have the financial power to go to other conventions hmmmmmm

I don't know if I really want to get into the game thing... Games I'd want to draw fanart for are ro2, kingdom hearts, odin sphere, ICO... I'm afraid this is all the games I have played. I never got to playing FF.. at this point there isn't really time for that before animenext to draw fanart for it.

I'd rather stick to shows.. but I don't know what's popular these days with con-goers. I want to draw fushigi yuugi since I didn't get a chance to draw fanart for that, or rozen maiden, ah my goddess, ouran high school, but I'm not sure how well known these shows are... might be safer to draw really good one piece fanart or ghibli or shows that are actually mainstream like MLP, adventure time, cowboy bebop, naruto, dragonball... etc. -_-

Have a painting I finished today:

Tomorrow I will be doing a massive amount of work.
Considering how much work I did for school today and how many chores I did, it's a miracle I'm even awake at this hour.. I'm exhausted.

Here is what I have for tonight:

Also on the facebook: [link]

Starting next week Thursday, I will be able to paint very often and very much.
Conventions that I'm putting paintings into: Animeboston, animenext, otakon.
Tabling at: animenext only.

Hear from/see you all soon.

My wood tile is coming along OK. It's developed some squiggly wet lines because I applied the varnish much too thick. It's nothing a light sanding with a 300 grit sandpaper rotary sander can't fix though.

While working on this test tile I got an idea, which is similar in technique to this person's work:

but considering how much time I have left, and how little experience I have in varnish so far, my piece will not be pushed as far as Fukahori takes it.

And last night's 6 hour stream, combined with footage from a previous painting session so that you can see the whole work done so far:

It's coming along quite nicely. I'm very pleased about how the face is turning out. See a photo of it here: [link]

Now it's just a matter of grind to finish off the clothing and hair decorations, which should not be as technically demanding as the face was.

Hi, I've started an informal irc channel for artistalley [link] so that we can chat and hang out / stay up to date with everything that's going on.

Everyone who is interested in tabling, will table, or did table in the past is welcome to come and mingle!

For those of you who have mirc, xchat, or chatzilla:
server: irc.rizon.net

I have been slacking off on writing in my paper journal, so I must record some things here:

1. Playing around with painting on wood. Below is a "test tile" I made this weekend to test some technical curiosities:

This needs more research. I don't know anything about the traditions or history of painting on wood. With wood, my impulse in it is actually to carve it, or to make a really good bonfire (which I am quite good at). I also have no personal connections to it, which I find to be quite serious. At least with painting or ceramics, I have some academic training in it, and drawing I've been doing my whole life. But wood is just a foreign thing to me. The only exciting thing I've done with wood in my life is

and refinish the wood floors of my house. (which was in fact very exciting, but purely in a responsible-adult kind of way.)
More on this problem on facebook: [link]

2. Started "Waternymphs" painting.. somewhat concerned this idea will take too long to execute.

3. Considering "Arnolfini" painting idea. Concerned this will take too long to execute.

4. Bought a canvas for "Ophelia" idea. Should be a piece of cake to make.

5. "Girl Portrait Earring" will be finished next weekend, for sure.

6. Still no new illustration ideas. :V derp derp derp derp I do want to draw adventure time fanart. I really should take advantage of the fact that Fiona wore P.Serenity's dress.

7. I heard there will in fact NOT be a new sailor moon this summer. [link]

8. My mind is feeling very busy with the idea of having to find a table mate (or I could hire YearGirl again, maybe), order prints, decide if I want big prints or not, order stickers, draw new stuff and order prints of that too... etc. for anime next.

Considering the shirt design, and how people may come to the table looking for similar stuff, I think I may draw child-versions of all kinds of shows. This idea is not completely developed and may be scrapped as necessary. I have been considering using "cute" to express really interesting, clever ideas for some time now... the solution is not totally clear. I do know I don't want to just draw SD versions of characters "just because I can".

Sorry this update is so cryptic. I simply did not want to spoil too much, in case some ideas get put on the back burner for another time. This May might end up being one of the most intense Mays to be experienced. Once classes have their finals I can start to put my 1000% into paintings for AnimeBoston, and AnimeNext.

animenext t-shirt contest winner announced

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 17, 2013, 9:59 PM

Something very exciting has happened today. The t-shirt winner is announced [link]
It will be very fun to see people wearing the design. A first, for sure! I will definitely take many many many photos.

I wish I could draw a celebration drawing, but I am so sleepy. On the upside, this weekend I will be able to sleep a bunch, paint a bunch, and draw a bunch.... after I finish a little bit of homework. And determine what I need to do for a certain term paper. And garden. And care for my pets.. When will it end???

AnimeNext artist alley: 99% likely to attend
AnimeNext Art Show: 100% intending to submit at least 4 paintings, hopefully 6.
ANext Goal: hotel need? weekend figure out

Grammar need? who?

Something I realized for paintings: I need smaller canvases. I will go buy some Friday.
Something I realized about my work style: I do not like to put off work until the last minute because problems only get worse if you ignore them.

I wish to share my current painting, but it is currently in "the uncanny valley" where you cannot be sure if the work is correct or creepy. This weekend's goal: get out of the uncanny valley.

Painting Plans: ABoston, ANext

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 14, 2013, 4:03 PM

Since I won't be artist alley tabling at anime boston, I am going to be painting my brains out for it instead.
But, like many intentions in life, it's still restricted by time and resources.

It's my general feel of things that the next two to three weeks will be hellish because of grad school.
Which is unfortunate, because it means that the actual amount of time I have to paint will be quite restricted...

I've also just recently noticed that anime next is merely two weeks apart from anime boston, but Otakon is a good five weeks after AnimeNext. One convention between ANext and Otakon is AnimeExpo... but it is all the way in California, so it's not likely I will go unless I do really really unbelievably well at Next and Boston. I will certainly try!

I have two paintings that may need a touch up but are otherwise ready to go.
But I also want to work on several new paintings:
A painting based on Ophelia
A painting based on Water Nymphs
Perhaps the Night Watch.
Perhaps something Adventure Time.

And finish paintings that have been started:
A Sailor Jupiter portrait
A painting based on Leda and the Swan

It doesn't seem realistic to expect to be able to complete all of the painting ideas I have by Boston, and even among the ideas I do have, some of them are too complex to pull off in the amount of time I have... I would only have about a week per painting, and it's difficult to find time to paint. Whenever I do find time to paint I realize I have to do more homework: This homework thing just appears whenever I think I have time to paint, draw, or write.

BUT seeing how there is no homework right now (Well there is, but it can wait) I will begin painting at 8:30pm EST at [link] Now back to HW.

animeboston 2013 art show confirmed

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 3, 2013, 8:54 PM
I will be putting in at least six pieces into animeboston 2013's art show.
Paintings that will be making a second debut:

Eva Catching Sahaquiel

Sailor Neptune Wave
I may alter this piece to keep with Anime Boston's Art Show regulations "Subject matter for all works should be drawn from the styles of Japanese culture including, but not limited to, manga and anime." Plus people were unhappy about her face. Some people were happy, but many were confused... Must re-evaluate to see if altering the face will alter the meaning/purpose.

NEW pieces --
No preview: A painting about "Princess Tutu"
No preview: A painting with Shinji and Rei
No preview: A painting with Asuka
No preview: Princess Sailor Jupiter

There may be more than 6 pieces. Topics of interest: Adventure Time, Ghibli movies, Sora no Woto, Nichijo, Gurren Lagann, Lucky Star, kino's journey, jigoku shoujo, Sailor Moon, miniature wood paintings, (your suggestion here, especially on any post 2011 anime)

animenext 2013: artist alley table not confirmed, art show 100% likely unless no space at con.
T-shirt contest winner still undetermined: [link] so I don't know if I'll be tabling or not.

Sorry about any strange typos and misspellings. They are happening because I'm very sleepy. I will fix them tomorrow.

Gallery Secret:
My Featured gallery and my Browse gallery are very very different.
Features has work I consider "top notch" or "milestone", while browse is simply by chronological order.
I rarely submit something to scraps directly anymore, but sometimes I'll go back into Browse and scrap older drawings.

Anime Boston:
It is looking more and more likely that I will be able to go to AB, but just to "hang out" and not to table.
Oh yeah, and to put stuff in art show jjajajajaajajjajajajaajajjajajajaaja

Time to go research what anime is hip and popular these days,
since I still think 90s anime and anime from the noughties is "popular".
:iconforeveraloneplz:

I've also been thinking I really should draw more fanart for shows I like.
Not just anime but regular TV shows too, like scrubs, parks and rec, gator boys, duck dynasty, pitbulls & parolees, mythbusters etc etc etc.

With the delightful accompaniment of the zettai karen children OST.

Lland is probably the most neglected story haha.

I started this story when I was in middle school, so .. like 15 years ago.

It started off as a simple rayearth/el hazard/wedding peach knockoff but over time the story became large, complicated, and unmanageable. All the characters have gone through multiple gender swaps, age/height changes, setting changes, multiple family members/too many people problems, merging with other story ideas & their problems etc etc etc.

Over time I've begun to focus more on the intent or purpose of this story to figure out where to start it to best portray that purpose, because there is multiple ways to tell this story. I'm sure if it wants to be told, it will figure itself out one of these days. There's no rush.

Other animenext t-shirt entries

Sat Mar 23, 2013, 6:31 PM

I've been trying to find other people who have entered, but it seems a lot of them don't want to post yet.
I suppose it may be because the contest people do not want people to know what entries they have received to avoid controversy.

A. [link] youtu.be/SU8ZNwRsP4I at [link]
Hmm she has the highest google rank.
I didn't use very good keywords in my posts about my entry.
Fixed that, though I think deviantart overall has an unnaturally low keyword discovery rate on google....
Maybe it's more that her gallery is x50 more popular than my gallery lol

B. [link]
Hasn't posted his or her entry / most likely entered

C. [link]
Difficult to tell if he or she entered.

D. [link]
May or may not have entered.

c'mon google and pixiv and deviantart. provide more useful search results!

Something I just noticed that is bothering me like fleas on a cat:
"The theme for this year is AnimeNEXT In Wonderland. Interpretation is up to the artist though please avoid ...
In the artwork so far the corresponding characters are Minae - Alice, Security Mascot - the White Rabbit, Gamna - the Cheshire Cat, and Bob - the Mad Hatter."
[link]

Totally missed reading that. Hmm. I hope it's OK that I didn't stick to their character setup.

More Photoshop Demo Ideas

Fri Mar 15, 2013, 5:53 AM

I've been thinking about making more photoshop demos.

I was thinking something simple, like "hair drawing demo" or "hand drawing demo" or "pose drawing demo" or something...

Originally I was going to make more demos on how to use novelty [link] , but I must admit I'm getting kind of bored with its slow progress / no estimated release date. Maybe when a release date is announced I'll reconsider making videos for it. But right now I feel like making demo videos for novelty may not be the wisest idea because the product is in beta, so anything could change if the creator is willing to put in the effort.

I've made a few demos before: [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link]

They are not the most amazing demos in the whole world, but it's not a demo's level of completion that affects what people get out of it -- it's the content.

Old stuff Highlight Corner

In irrelevant news:
I learned the word "diadem" yesterday from my ASL word of the day app. It means "crown".
Also, exploring old English songs.. finally I learned the song "They call her La Bamba" has a title.
I still sometimes think English songs are all nameless sound-bits because that's how they are treated in Korea. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
But actually a lot of them were hits when they came out or became hits later on.

Also, finally the RO2 boom is dying down to the point where I can actually see analytics on my drawing videos...
I haven't seen any analytics on them in 3 months. whew...

deviantart service improvement suggestions

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 5, 2013, 9:53 AM
Hey yall, I just took a survey on deviantart.
They gave me a couple code to get 15% off of something, like a print or stie goods or I forgot.

LpY937EsJ :eager:

I will not be using it, so if any of y'all need a code. there ya go.

The survey got me thinking about this site.
I really should be working on a midterm right now that will contribute towards my current career goals but all my stuff is on here! I have to care.

1. Integrate youtube and ustream/livestream into this site.
It's absolutely ridiculous how this site has a redirect page. The redirect page absolutely discourages people from sharing links to eternal sources. Youtube links should be integrated so that instead of a redirect site, the youtube video is embedded into the site. Youtube users should also be allowed to comment on this site with their youtube ID.

2. Allow facebook-deviantart and tumblr/twitter-deviantart and possibly linkedin-deviantart integration
People should be allowed to comment, share, and "like" pictures.
Any stories and links to the picture should be displayed to the owner (like tumblr, facebook). Being more integrated might help reduce the shame-factor associated with the site.

3. the gallery stats page needs to be more useful.
It needs to not only provide data in a better manner (dashboard, weekly, monthly, yearly breakdown, event-based breakdown) but also identify how the user can improve performance (do most visitors visit in the summer? in the winter? On mondays? What kinds of pictures are the most popular, and why? What are the internal and external sources of traffic?)

4. Content must be more dense.
I don't know about anyone else but I'd like to have more than 4 pieces displayed on the top of the page.
There's too much empty space on the site. Maybe the site can offer smaller but better thumbnails (allow users to customize scale/rotation of thumbs through a site app / have taller or shorter thumbs?) so that more of them can be displayed in a row. This would also address the problem of this site requiring way too much useless scrolling. (unlike google where you want to scroll down to see the other search results in case the top 4 were irrelevant, on deviantart I hardly ever ever ever ever have a desire or purpose to scroll down.)

5. Prints are too expensive. Who buys them??!
I would just get rid of this whole business division or figure out a way to make it more competitive. Or maybe outsource it to someone who does it way better, like printkeg, shutterfly, vistaprint (not great for art prints but they're good for business cards and text-based posters), maaaaaaaaybe cafepress (althought they are kind of doing lousy too).

6. Groups front pages need to be more community-empowering
I'd rather search pictures by tags, or look through collaborative galleries that would function like "shows". Groups are owner-glorifying, and their front pages are not as useful or content-dense as they should be. They should be community-oriented not owner-oriented. I only visit a group's front page ONCE to join them and then ONCE agin to leave them. They're that useless.

I don't think deviantart's business startegy should be in products, like prints. Unless they figure out a way to make the prints more attractive (more showings/demos? better quality? lower cost? professional preference?) it's kinda lose-lose since you're trying to sell a physical product but you have this website that is largely unrelated to the physical products. This is why I also think premium subscriptions are a very poor way to maintain the site. There are too many other free alternatives like facebook, tumblr, blogspot with BETTER social tools.
Charge money for what is free on other sites that have a bigger potential for audience? Seriously?

I think deviantart's business strategy should be in offering the best or the most unique but useful service. Probably more unique but useful since there's just no topping all those photo sites like instagram and tumblr and even imgur. That's why I think deviantart could really find it s future in being a social-hub where people from all these other major social networking sites could participate without having to bother deviantart.

This week is packed.

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 3, 2013, 4:34 PM
I was trying to draw for the animenext t-shirt contest this last friday.. but.. my god, it was hard. Terribly hard.

Usually when I try to draw something, I have an idea of what kinds of things I want in the picture, and then all I have to do is draw the ideas to scale on the medium. The idea is like a quick flash of shapes.. There's multiple reasons why drawing was so hard.
1. I haven't drawn in a while
2. I have to draw on paper in a while
3. I haven't drawn from my mind in a while

I must've spent a good 40 minutes trying to draw one squirrel-like character (animals! Agh!!), changing its pose and scale each time, until finally I settled to one pose and one scale because I had given up, not because this pose and this size was the best.

The human girl was no easier to draw either.. I kept thinking about how I wanted her pose to feel (whimsical, curious, active) but I couldn't really find a pose that really expressed all these things correctly... I did put her down with some pose in the end, but I want to fix it. I just don't know how.

Now it is Sunday.. I had so much homework I didn't have time to draw at all. Tomorrow I have a job interview, Tuesday I need to prepare myself for creating a presentation for next week, and Wednesday is packed from sunrise to after class (9PM).

I'm worried that, even if I get a good concrete idea, that I won't have enough time to execute it. And having just enough time to execute an idea isn't good enough this time around -- I have to have some time to mess up a few times since it's been quite a while since I've been able to draw anything.

It would be nice if I could enter this contest... but I guess it won't be the end of the world if I can't enter. I can just not table at animenext. It's close enough that I can afford to risk it all on paintings instead...

It would be nice to get a table though. It would motivate me to draw more once the school year lets out. If there's no table at animenext I will probably spend my summer studying statistics, hopefully interning, and being afraid of my next semester's classes.

This is an interesting vision of summer.
One of my reasons for creating paintings for otakon in 2012 because I was afraid that once I started grad school that I would have no more free time to paint.
I wanted to go out with a bang, so to speak. But after Otakon I felt tremendously encouraged, and I thought it was great how painting was bringing people closer to em rather than me having to work to be closer to people.
But maybe.. just maybe.. I did go out with a bang. Or I will. Sigh.
Wouldn't it be great if I could astro-project myself, and one of me could paint, and one of me could go to this college and pursue a career?

I've been posting little scraps on the facebook [link] facebook.com/skimlines these past few weeks but it looks like the next two weeks will be a total deadzone followed by two different illustrations for AnimeNext on March 10th.

This week:
Midterm test
midterm paper due
need to finalize animenext tshirt idea sketches

Next week:
midterm paper due
can't plan to do any work wednesday
Give up on animenext if no sketches are produced OR
need to finalize animenext tshirt ideas b&w and color versions

Papers usually take me about 3 hours per page to write so... two 5 page papers, 30 hours of writing? dayyyum.
I did sign up for a table at animenext but I think I actually have a better chance with the t-shirt contest than with a random lotto.

How do people meet?

Thu Feb 21, 2013, 2:42 PM by *skimlines:iconskimlines:
I've been thinking today about how people meet.
I've met people and got to know them at club meetings, by being proactive and saying hi and being nosy, by having the same sense of humor as someone, from pursuing hobbies (which I guess is the same as a club meeting), through other people...

In stories, characters meet because there's a big conference (lotr), they have the same wacko magic powers (sailor moon), they work in the same place, they work together, etc.

I think that's about it.
Yet not everyone who meets under these conditions become best of friends. Also adults have a rough time making "friends" compared to kids making friends. Adults don't make friends: They network.

I guess I need to think like a kid to figure out how people become friends.

Writing High Fantasy is a Catch-22

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 18, 2013, 9:40 PM

Writing high fantasy is a catch-22.

You have to define the world the story takes place in in order to write the story, but in order to know how much of the world to define you have to know how involved in the world the story gets. I've tried making up what I need as the story progresses, but eventually so much stuff would just be made up that there would be no challenge in writing it, or the writing would come off awfully contrived and unconvincing. I've also tried defining the world first, but I take it too far. I mean "this is like a history textbook" or "I'm inventing another writing system!" too far.

I find it to be difficult to suspend my disbelief with most high fantasy stories as it is (because so many of them are so poorly written that I find it too intellectually insulting that the story expects me to fall for it)... Long story cut short:

Is there a trick to writing high fantasy?
